Elaine Lucas Senior Center
Project Location: Macon-Bibb County, Georgia
Completion Date: 2020
Leaders from Macon-Bibb County approached Sizemore Group to design the newly-merged county’s Elaine Lucas Senior Center. County leaders hoped to create a senior center where older residents could come together, take classes, and lead a healthier lifestyle.
But in addition to benefiting the elder population, the facility was intended to serve as a connection for two previously autonomous communities. Macon and Bibb County consolidated in 2015.
To accomplish this, community engagement was paramount to ensure residents from both communities felt ownership of the building.
Sizemore Group led an extensive community engagement process, including public meetings led by Sizemore Group and follow-up meetings and input sessions with the Senior Center Advisory Committee.
The team prioritized making sure that all community members had the opportunity to be heard and their needs addressed.
The team approached each community meeting with enthusiasm, taking care to ensure everyone walked away feeling valued and more connected to the community in which they live.
The completed Elaine Lucas Senior Center reflects the community in which it was built. The multi-purpose room boasts slightly curved and angular ceilings, allowing for a more open and inviting space. The lobby’s wood slot ceiling with linear lights brings exterior elements indoors, making the entrance lobby feel warm, inviting and inclusive.
